EC 91102 Australias Mining Monthly
EDITORIAL BRIEF - November 5, 2009 - Australia’s Mining Monthly
LUBE TECHNOLOGY KEY TO MACHINE EFFICIENCY AND CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION
A more conservative business outlook experienced by the mining industry over the last twelve months has encouraged financial managers to look seriously at a range of cost reduction measures to improve return on investment.
At the same time, looming carbon reduction legislation, together with growing environmental concerns by the community, staff and stakeholders are pressuring mine managers to implement meaningful carbon footprint and emission reduction strategies.
“Fortunately, both these goals can be achieved simultaneously through the application of readily available technology – at a modest investment”, said Laurie Hyland of Engine Care Systems.
“Preventive maintenance on diesel powered equipment is where management will see real, immediate and measurable gains.
Lubrication costs impact every facet of the mining, quarries and similar industries by reducing downtime on equipment ranging from haul trucks to power generation; from crushers to handling and loading equipment.
High performance filtration systems, oil centrifuges and the use of 100 percent synthetic oil will deliver huge savings in terms of oil consumption, filter usage, reduction of emissions and dramatically cut the environmental impact of waste reduction.
For example, typical users of Spinner centrifuges, in conjunction with 100 per cent synthetic oil and regular oil quality testing, find they are able to significantly extend engine life and reduce the cost of oil, filters, parts and labour by around 75 percent.
“The combination of downtime reduction solutions we provide also includes fuel catalysts which produce more complete combustion for efficiency and reduction of residue and toxic emissions from unburned fuel and fuel cost savings”. Hyland said
Engine Care Systems believe that mining companies are far more conscious of carbon reduction and are striving for a higher level of accountability in this area.
Strong evidence of the policies being implemented across the industry includes the appointment of “hydrocarbon champions” within company management.
