Blenners Transport Cuts Costs
REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT STAYS ON ROAD LONGER - CUTS COSTS
When the Blenner family’s banana growing business needed to get its produce from Tully in Queensland to market more efficiently, they decided to establish their own transport operation. This diversification in 1988 quickly developed into a thriving refrigerated transport business.
Today, Blenners has depots in Brisbane, Tully, Innisfail, Townsville, Mareeba and Cairns. It runs a fleet 60 prime movers and 90 vans, including six road trains and 20 rail containers. The company transports freight for some of the country’s major food producers on routes between Melbourne and Cairns.
Roger Blenner said, “At the peak of the banana season, we have transported 140 vans per week out of the Innisfail and Tully depots to the major capitals of Australia.”
“Several years ago we identified oil consumption and service intervals as costs that could be reduced significantly through the use of filtration technology. We fitted the first Spinner II oil centrifuges around twelve years ago.
We found by using Spinner centrifuges on all our vehicles, in conjunction with the use of synthetic oil and regular oil quality testing, we were immediately able to extend our 20,000 km drain intervals up to 60,000 km, depending on the engines and/or equipment combinations (singles, B-Doubles or road trains).
Extended service intervals have enabled us to significantly extend engine life and reduce our cost of oil, filters, parts and labour by around 75 percent. We can keep our trucks on the road longer, making our whole operation much more efficient”, Roger said.
Laurie Hyland of Engine Care Systems, supplier of the Spinner centrifuges, said “We are often told how regular oil sampling on engines fitted with a centrifuge can achieve double or treble standard oil change intervals.
This sub-micron filtration and premium imported synthetic oils (such as Amsoil) has clearly demonstrated that distances of up to 2 million kilometres are now common on large diesel engines before an engine overhaul is needed.”
