Spinner II 996 - LCB Centrifuge

Designed for compressor equipped engines, trucks, buses, grader, loaders etc.

The Spinner II 996-LCB centrifuge incoprorates a remote mounting base. This uses compressed air and float valve assembly to force return the cleaned oil to the engine sump, enabling remote mounting with a small diameter return hose (e.g. on a vehicle chassis). Air consumption is almost nil, air flow to the sump being prevented by the float mechanism. Oil flow to the air system is prevented by a non-return valve.

Suitable for lubrication systems with capacity from 15 to 90 litres, where a compressed air supply is available. Filter dirt capacity 0.90 litres. Filter oil capacity 1.125 litres. Minimum oil drain pipe size 12mm internal.

CLEAN OIL DELIVERS IMMEDIATE SAVINGS

Today, more than 60 diesel engine manufacturers worldwide either factory fit or endorse the use of Spinner oil cleaning centrifuges. Also, many other truck and equipment manufacturers recommend the fitting of sub-micron oil conditioning systems to maintain and surpass traditional oil and filter change intervals.

 The growing popularity of these devices on engines for transport, mining, earthmoving and power generation equipment is due to a centrifuge’s ability to super clean the oil of an engine or machinery.

A centrifuge removes a large proportion of the abrasives and soot present in oil which is caused by the design of today’s low particulate emission engines.

Emission regulations mean that soot and other abrasives from the combustion process are channelled into their oil systems instead of the exhaust, which is forbidden under emission laws.

When abrasives are eliminated by a centrifuge, you also remove heat-generating friction from the oil. When friction heat is present between bearing surfaces or any two moving pieces of machinery, that heat expands the metal surfaces, which can reduce oil film thickness. As the centrifuge cleans oil down to sub-micron particles, friction is significantly reduced, adding to the oil’s lubricity. Heat reduction also fractionally increases oil film thickness, enhancing the life of components and extending oil and filter change intervals.

By using submicron filtration in the lubrication system, it’s quite common to double the life of an engine between overhauls. You stop the abrasive wear within one or two oil change intervals. We have seen many businesses significantly reduce premature wear in turbochargers, compressors, engine brakes and all other internal components. How By-pass Centrifugal Oil Cleaners Work

Full flow filters are designed to process all of the oil used to lubricate the moving parts of an engine. However, the need to maintain a high flow and limit pressure drop across the filtration media require large porasity filter media which restricts the ability to filter out sub-micron particles. Full flow filters therefore essentially act as a screen or barrier against the progress of large abrasive particles through the lubrication oil circuit, which may cause catastrophic failure.

Powerfully Effective

The Spinner II centrifuge is a highly efficient bypass filtration device and processes the sump/tank contents approximately 10x per hour. A centrifuge is not a barrier type filtration device and does not rely upon filtration media to remove contaminant particles. Removal of contaminant particles is based on their relative density, therefore contaminant removal is not limited to particle size.

It is typically powered only by engine oil pressure, although pump-assisted units are also available. The centrifuge operates at speeds from 2000 to 8000 rpm, generating a force more than 2000/3000 times greater than gravity.

This force extracts solid contaminants from the fluid stream and deposits them on the inner wall of the cleanable rotor as a dense, solid cake. 
Cleaning the Centrifuge is a simple operation involving removing the rotor, thoroughly cleaning out the contents, replacing the paper insert, inspecting the O-Rings and re-assembling for continued use.

Working principle

Oil is pumped into the centrifuge at engine pressure and directed into a hollow spindle where it exits via a cross drilling into the centrifuge rotor. The rotor becomes full of pressurised oil that is then forced to exit through two tangentially opposed nozzles in the rotor base. This causes rotation of the free spinning rotor assembly thus generating the centrifugal force within the rotor. As contaminant particles enter the rotor they are subjected to a centrifugal force, causing them to migrate rapidly outwards to the inner surface of the rotor wall where, over time they compact to form a dense cake. We offer clean and re-assemble rotor designs as well as disposable rotors for some models.

Centrifuge Operation

1) Dirty oil enters the separation chamber under normal pressure, flowing up through a hollow spindle. 

2) Oil passes through a spinning rotor where centrifugal force 2,000 times greater than gravity separates contaminants from the oil.

3) Contaminants accumulate on the rotor surface as a solid cake.

4) Clean oil exits through opposing, twin nozzles that power the centrifuge up to 6,000 rpm. 

5) Clean oil returns to the sump/reservoir from the level control base.

6) Gravity drain options are commonly used as well.

Today's diesel engines need additional microscopic bypass oil filtration far more than ever before. Engine manufacturers now are forced to build engines with very little exhaust particulate emissions. The combustion process still produces gritty sooty by-products that now have nowhere else to go but into the oil. Oil suppliers are designing better oils that can keep these tiny partiles in suspension to normally still achieve the traditional oil change interval, however there is now much more dirt being pumped through all the bearing surfaces of the engine. This residue could be likened to diluted grinding paste!

If this new technology oil is kept clean, a very long engine life can be achieved. Because the centrifuge is non selective in it's particle filtration size, and does not require filter cartridges, it is unsurpassed in operating economies and filtration efficiencies. Environmental concern for the safe and efficient disposal of all engine waste products is growing worldwide. Legislation in many areas dictates that previously ignored scrap components must now be recycled to save the world's non-replenishable natural resources. Already, disposal of oil filter elements in landfill sites is prohibited in many US states; similar legislation is being introduced in Europe and other areas of the world - soon to be Australiasia.

The "dirty waste" contaminant removed by the centrifuge passes the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure known as TCLP. All SPINNER II centrifuges are designed to remove contaminant that is almost free from oil and that can be disposed as harmless waste in normal rubbish collection methods.

Many of the technologies used by engine manufacturers to reduce harmful exhaust emissions increase the level of soot in the lubricating oil. SPINNER II by-pass centrifuge technology has been proven to have the ability to remove large amounts of harmful combustion soot and therefore allowing the manufacturer to achieve future emission reductions in line with worldwide environmental legislation without compromising service intervals.

In many applications substantial environmental contirbutions can be achieved by using the ''cleanable screen, centrifuge'' concept, eg. if an oil change interval is able to be doubled that would result in a 50% reduction in oil and filter cartridge disposal. If cleanable screen full flow filtration and centriduges can be used there will be no filters to dump for the life of the engine. Obviously this also achieves a large financial saving as well as contribution to environmental waste reduction. The cleanable screen full flow filters must be only fitted if the engine is equipped with a SPINNER II centrifugal oil cleaning system.

Q - Will fitment of a centrifuge affect the lube oil pressure on my engine?

A - No. Almost all medium to high-speed diesel engines have minimum surplus to requirements oil pressure at lube pump in excess of 30%. The SPINNER II centrifuge takes up to a maximum of 10% of the engine oil pump output. 

Therefore it is important to use the correct SPINNER II centrifuge for the application.

Q - Will the centrifuge remove the additives in the oil? 

A - No. All additives are in solution. The centrifuge at best creates G forces of around 3,000 times the force of gravity and cannot remove additives, it is like sugar mixed with coffee, it cannot be removed. Spent additives, when mixed with soot become additional wear particles and contribute to oil thickening. Only spent additive package in lubricating oil is removed along with soot and other debris by the spinner. It’s to be remembered that additives deplete, that’s why we change oil. It is also a known fact that the dirtier the oil the quicker the additive pack will destruct. This explains why engine oil burn often stops or decreases and oil lasts longer soon after fitting a SPINNER II centrifuge.

Q - If I fit a centrifuge do I still need a full flow filter or a by-pass filter?

A - A full flow filter is a barrier filter, it stops large particles and should be left on the engine. Certain engine manufacturers fit a by-pass filter to tackle small damaging particles. Most by-pass filters can only filter down to around 10 microns. Most are around 20 microns. When you fit a SPINNER II centrifuge you must remove any additional by-pass filter unless it is incorporated in the full flow filter, this because collectively they could affect the oil pressure. As the centrifuge is the superior cleaner, extracting dirt particles less than 0.25 of 1 micron, there is not need to have both bypass filters. This always results in an added economy and extends oil life.

Q - Why is lube oil type and temperature so important?

A - The perfect installation for the fitment of a SPINNER II centrifuge to an engine is with an oil specification of SAE30 or multigrade with a temperature of 75 (C) degrees or higher. At 75 degrees (C) on a SAE30 = 25CST this low viscosity through the centrifuge will create greater rotational speed as there is less restriction. In conclusion, the hotter the oil and the thinner the oil the better the dirt/soot separation. The less abbrasives in the oil the longer engine componentry life, which results in substantial $avings in rebuilds and down time and of course dollars and cents. The better the oil quality, the better the result.

Q - Can the Centrifuge remove soot?

A - The SPINNER II Centrifuge has an excellent track record in controlling soot. Today’s modern diesel engines all suffer from some sort of soot related problems, some much more than others. When soot is present in lube oil and not removed, not only will you see oil thickening but the soot has the ability to attack the ZDDP antiwear additive. This results in premature breakdown of the oil. There is nothing in the market place designed to totally address soot related problems. The SPINNER II centrifuge is widely accepted as the industry leader world wide for maintaining traditional oil change intervals. Also with Quality oil sampling, and very best quality oils, many centrifuge users can substantially extend oil & filter change intervals while maintaining the boundaries of OEM oil cleanliness parameters. This will also achieving substantially extended engine life before rebuilds.

Q - Can the centrifuge contribute in any way to destructing my engine?

A - Definitely not, the centrifuge has a preset cut off valve set at approximately 20psi. It cannot function under that pressure. If the engine oil pump became weak or ceased to work, once the pressure dropped to less than 20 psi the oil supply to the centrifuge would be cut off. Therefore the SPINNER II centrifuge can never contribute to engine failure, that factor is one of the significant reasons why the spinna enjoys support of over 60 engine manufacturers worldwide
